Genocide in Gaza!
I don’t really like talking too much politics, but it affects us all in the end, whether it´s domestic or international. In this case, it´s about who we are as human beings, and whether or not we believe in our human right to exist, to live in peace, our compassion towards others, and whether we have the strength to stand up against atrocities that cause intolerable human suffering, especially to innocent children and men and women, wherever that may be in the world, be it, Ukraine, Palestine, Sudan, Ethiopia, Chad, Myanmar etc….
Due to events of the last 2 years in Gaza, with constant live streaming of destruction, massive civilian death and starvation, I have been doing a little bit of research on the subject. It´s the unprecedented human death toll, to civilians, reporters, health care workers that has prompted my attention to Gaza in particular.
As a result of the above, and following much deliberation and investigation, the United Nations has officially recognised that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza. This was pre-empted by international humanitarian organisations, Israeli humanitarian agencies and even the ex Prime Minister of Israel, Ehud Olmert.
We all believe that any nation has a right to defend itself, as Israel did after the horrific attack carried out by Hamas on October 7th 2023. However, it has gone beyond any rational proportionality, and has now revealed it´s true intentions to wipe out any possibility of the Palestinian people living and existing in the Gaza strip, and even the West Bank.
I just have to think for one moment, that if a bomb landed on my home, my family, my city, and wonder what it would be like to hold the dead body of my child in my hands with my home destroyed behind me, literally brings me to tears. If I had to walk for miles to get some food and risk being shot to death, or need urgent medical attention only to find the hospital has been blown away. It all seems incredible, unimaginable and inhumane, but it´s all happening in front of our eyes. This is not war, this is wanton destruction, psychological torture, carefully calculated and perpetrated in the name of self defence.
It seems that for the very people the word Genocide was termed and incorporated into the United Nations charter, to prevent it from ever happening again, with the legal and moral obligation of all nations to prevent or stop it whenever it happens, the Israeli government is carrying out this most heinous act, supported, very sadly, by a large proportion of it´s population. The current Israeli government seems to have no respect or empathy for what their forefathers, parents, grandparents suffered during the holocaust, and the pain, death and destruction it left behind.
According to Israel, it has suffered years of rockets and attacks from Palestine into Israeli territory. However, what seems to be missing from the rhetoric is that decades of oppression, military rule, apartheid and illegal occupation have created a desperate and extreme situation with the Gazan population seemingly having no other recourse but to elect extremist group Hamas as their leaders to fight for their rights, as no-one else in the world seemed to.
Israel wants to eradicate Hamas, which any nation facing such an attack would want to do. However, what will happen if that eventually becomes true. In the West bank there is no Hamas, but there is Israeli government approved illegal settlements, settler violence and recent statements that the region will be entirely annexed. Even Donald Trump has suggested that Gaza could become a riviera in the middle east!
With this continued upscaling of aggression, I have very little hope that this will end soon, or even have any kind of satisfactory ending. The US government, European Union and other nations have been complicit in what has transpired over the last 2 years. Netanyahu believes he can do whatever he wants, he thinks he is the saviour of Israel, and the wannabe dictator Trump is enabling him, with the US playing hand in hand in it´s role, providing funding, bombs and intelligence. This comes from years of pro-Israeli lobbies funding, donating and influencing American politics, on both sides of the spectrum. Although, I have to say this type of funding to gain political bias does exist in most governments.
Netanyahu and Trump should be brought to justice and made to pay for their crimes, which I believe should also include treason for Trump for inciting the January 6th, 2020 Capitol hill assault. This should be done NOW! The UN needs to stand up and execute it´s powers. I hope that the rest of the world has the determination and strength to stand up against this blatant tyranny, impunity and oppression towards anyone that stands in the way. Lets not forget that Netanyahu is a wanted war criminal, while Trump is already convicted of falsifying business records.
In a historic move, the UK, Canada, Australia, France and Portugal, appalled by the horrific humanitarian situation, seem to have finally seen the light, detaching themselves from the US position, and have recently officially recognised the state of Palestine in order to help save whatever is left of a potential peace solution.
Will this help? I hope so. There is much more to do than just make declarations. We must believe there is hope. There are millions of people standing up, all over the world, including Jewish people who have family and friends in Israel, protesting, making their voices heard, risking their lives, their careers, their freedoms to stand up for what they believe in, the basic human right to exist, and to live free in this world. They are more courageous than I am, and I salute and respect them.
I have been feeling almost ashamed for not speaking up, silently condemning, but publicly keeping quiet. This is why I have decided to speak up now before it´s too late. I want to be able to look into my family´s eyes, and future generations, and tell them that I did what I could, however small it may be, to prevent these atrocious crimes happening in the future, and potentially to anyone of us, and send a message to future aggressors that there are more decent human beings in this world than there are politicians and generals, and the people will fight back and their crimes will not go unpunished.
It is only when the people stand up and make themselves heard, that the governments who supposedly represent us, should stop, listen and most of all ACT now in the hope that Palestine, Ukraine, Sudan, Ethiopia, Chad, Myanmar can one day look forward to what has followed in the aftermath of the wars and struggles in Vietnam, South Africa, Yugoslavia, Rwanda, Northern ireland etc, and find their peace..
Property Market Update:
It seems there is no letting up on the property sales market in Spain. Official numbers published have confirmed that the average property price in Spain has grown by 10.4% compared to July last year.
This has now taken prices to above the levels seen during the peak of the financial crisis in 2008. This is bull market territory. I am astonished by the prices some properties are commanding, and we are actually achieving those prices.
We have to go with the market. We cannot undervalue a property just because we believe it may be inflated. We must stick to our principals of valuation and market comparison. A shortage of supply, strong demand, and a relatively buoyant economy are all helping fuel this growth.
It is the market, financial institutions, and ultimately, the purchaser who decides whether a price for a property is justified or not, and whether they have the means to pay for it. Once this belief and ability ends, then the rally will end. And when will that be I hear you ask? How long is a piece of string, I reply?
Joke of the Month:
To end on a lighter note, because life needs to continue:
A woman goes to her doctor and says “Doctor, I seem to pass wind a lot, but luckily no-one seems to hear it, and no-one seems to smell it.” She continues “Look, I have been here two minutes, and I´ve passed wind four times already, and they were soundless and odourless”.
The doctor, with a surprised look on his face, nods and replies “I can treat this problem with an over-the-counter medication, a prescription, and a referral. The medication will help your body produce less gas. The prescription will help you recover your sense of smell. I’m giving you a referral to an audiologist to see if they can help you hear better.”
